Map-based Research

Florian's research method heavily relies on mapping to both gather and manage information. In geo-referencing found footage, he establishes "bounding boxes" for further field work and site-specific interventions. In an input presentation, he will outline the state of current projects and give insights into researching infrastructural projects.

Originating in military intelligence and having only been executed by niche analysts, aerial image interpretation, geolocation and other open source intelligence strategies gained widespread attention during the most recent violent conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. We will peek into declassified military guidebooks to gain insight into the strategies and terminology of image interpretation.

In the hands-on part of the workshop, we'll then try to set up working software solutions on the participants' laptops, depending on the choice of operating systems and attitude towards FLOSS. After that, we'll work through a set of showcase scenarios and try to find use cases for the participants' own activist/artistic practice.
